An Accessible Convention

The Democratic Party has made accessibility a priority in all aspects of the 2020 election cycle. We are committed to providing opportunities for equitable participation for everyone engaging our programs during this unprecedented virtual convention.

Communication Access and Ways to Watch

The convention’s daytime programming is packed with appealing constituency engagement meetings that will include CART live captions and ASL picture in picture. Be sure to register for these meetings in advance and receive a confirmation notice for links to access these meetings and their accessibility features.

An Inclusive Planning Process

We are committed to breaking barriers and increasing access through an integrated and inclusive convention planning process. Accessibility planning for the 2020 Democratic National Convention began earlier than ever before. For the first time, an accessibility review was taken into consideration during the search for a host city. Additionally, we brought on our accessibility staff earlier than in previous conventions to ensure that program access and ADA compliance plans would be developed alongside other convention planning.

The convention’s success will rely on building strong relationships with community partners who can provide the resources and local knowledge needed to develop a good accessibility plan. Helping us in this effort are over 25 disability community and accessibility service organizations. Together, they represent people with disabilities who intersect with the LGBTQ, people of color, senior, civic, educational, cultural and artistic, legal, housing advocacy, technology, and support services communities. It was critical to us that we chose accessibility partners rooted in the Deaf and disability community with a proven record of excellence in providing communication access.

Our American Sign Language supplier is Versatile Interpreting Services, a Milwaukee-based is Deaf-owned and operated company specializing in Certified Deaf Interpretation. The live captions will be available on our virtual platforms and by StreamText will be provided by Deaf Access Solutions, which has a long record of providing services in government and non-profit spaces.

Additionally, we are proud to be providing audio description services during the evening official convention proceedings by WildeMouth and BridgetMelton.com. Both of these Midwest based companies.
